'In 1994 in Dusseldorf, I saw a one of James Turrell's Perceptual Cells. Inside a free standing cubicle, a small dome was illuminated by an adjustable, coloured strobe light. Certain frequencies of flashing light can produce visual hallucinations (Brion Gysin and Ian Somerville explored this in the 1960’s with their ‘Dream Machines’). Inside Turrell’s work (I was tired and hungover), I experienced a visual hallucination of a vertiginous, plunging view of a cityscape with ant-like figures bustling about. Then fluorescent coloured plastic cutlery began to float across the scene. I reconstructed the experience in Amsterdam, using footage I shot from a huge Ferris wheel.' |
